Drybrook 1st XV Match Report

24th March - Glos. County Plate QF.

Gloucester Old Boys 5pts      Drybrook 20pts

Drybrook progressed into the semi finals of this competition with a comfortable victory at Horton Road.  It was anything but comfortable for Drybrook in the opening quarter as Old Boys tested them severely with a series of lineout catch and drives that eventually led to a try in the corner.  Drybrook were then dealt another blow by the loss of second row John Duffin with a leg injury.  Centre Leon Meek kept Drybrook in the game at this stage with a number of powerful runs and solid tackles to keep the home side at bay and despite playing down the slope the visitors could only muster a Chris Thomas penalty to keep them in the hunt.  On the half hour Drybrook at last sprang into life and a delightful length of the field attack was only halted when Chris Rawlings was unable to hang on to the scoring pass.  Undeterred Drybrook kept up the pressure and fullback Steve Skelton chose a perfect line to break through near the posts for a try that Chris Thomas easily converted.

Drybrook took complete control in the second half as Old Boys rarely got out of their own half.  Spurred on by N0 8 Neil Morgan who made a number of telling breaks Drybrook continually had Old Boys on the back foot and deservedly increased their lead after 20 minutes.  Scrum half Carl Moore stole an Old Boys scrummage ball near the home line to cross for a try that Thomas easily converted.  Drybrook wrapped the game up with a second Thomas penalty near the end as they continued to exert pressure on the home line.
