Drybrook 1st XV Match Report

7th October - EDF Senior Vase

Bicester 30pts Drybrook 15pts

A much changed Drybrook team bowed out in the first round of this competition where an in disciplined display led to their downfall.  A total of 4 Drybrook players ended up in the sin bin at various stages of the match and each time Bicester capitalised by scoring tries.   Drybrook were at odds with the referee throughout the encounter and allowed their frustrations to get the better of them and consequently they were not at their best.  Bicester opened the scoring with a penalty after prop Scott Phelps was yellow carded and then they grabbed a try from a Drybrook drop out by exposing the space down the wing.  Steve Skelton reduced the arrears with a penalty for Drybrook but then the visitors lost the services of first Chris Rawlings and then Dale Critchley who were both despatched to the bin.  Just before the break the home side scored another try from a rolling maul to give them a 13pts-3pts lead at the break.

Immediately after the interval with Drybrook still down to 14 men Bicester scored again, this time near the posts following a good passage of play.  Back up to full strength Drybrook at last began to pressurise the home side and stand off Julian Horrobin crossed for a try down the blindside of a maul following good work from centres Steve Skelton and Leon Meek.  Horrobin was next to visit the bin after questioning the referee’s decision on 25 minutes and during his absence Bicester crossed for their 4th try to open up a 30pts-8pts advantage.  Into the last stages Drybrook felt a little patronised when they were awarded a penalty try after a Bicester defender palmed the ball into touch following a kick towards the corner.  Skelton converted but with there was too little time left for the visitors to make any real impact.
