Drybrook 1st XV Match Report

30th September - Gloucestershire Premier League

Longlevens 13 Drybrook 29pts

Drybrook recorded their fourth league victory on the trot but were not at their best against a  Longlevens outfit who looked better than their current bottom position suggests.  Drybrook tended to over complicate things in the first half and wasted more possession than Longlevens gained and at the interval held a very narrow lead.  Longlevens opened the scoring with a penalty after 10 minutes but Drybrook soon edged in front when a break down the blindside led to second row John Duffin crossing for a try.  Drybrook’s inadequacies allowed Longlevens to hang in there with some good defence and they eventually regained the lead with a second penalty.  Drybrook’s new half back combination of Scott Ward and Luke Beard began to get into their stride and a couple of good breaks from Ward should have reaped a better reward but in the end it was down to Beard to edge the visitors back in front with a penalty just before the interval.

Flanker Peter Meek was yellow carded early in the second half but Drybrook stepped up their game and began to take control.  Number 8 Neil Morgan and second row Dale Critchley were prominent for Drybrook in a series of attacks and it came as no surprise when skipper Tom Reed powered over from close range.  Beard converted Reed’s try and soon added the extras again when full back Steve Skelton capped a fine performance by racing over near the posts.  Poor defence from Drybrook let the home side in for a try down the blindside but the visitors made amends when Julian Horrobin scored on the overlap and Beard converted with his best kick of the day.
