Drybrook 10pts
Cinderford United 19pts
A broken leg suffered by Drybrook’s No 8 Dean Large caused this game to end 5
minutes early with Cinderford just about edging a well contested game.
Cinderford started the game strongly but somewhat surprisingly they shunned 2
early penalty kicks in front of the posts by electing to kick to the corner to
go for the try. Drybrook were able to keep them out but could do nothing to stop
a try on 10 minutes when a delicate chip to the corner was collected by winger
Lloyd Stapleton who raced over unopposed. Drybrook hit back immediately when
outside half Simon Rugman powered over the Cinderford line following a strong
spell of pressure. Drybrook lost hooker Chris Thomas to the sin bin for
persistent infringement but Cinderford could not make the advantage count as the
game became deadlocked. Right on the stroke of half time Cinderford regained the
lead when No 8 Ben Morgan broke through for a try with Danny Trigg adding the
conversion. A delightful move at the start of the second half involving Neil
Morgan and Chris Thomas should have led to a Drybrook try but unfortunately
Thomas spilled the ball with the line at his mercy. Cinderford’s Chris
Cunningham was then yellow carded for a high tackle and this gave Drybrook the
edge. They were able to reduce the deficit with a try from scrum half Tom
Treherne following sustained pressure on the visitor’s line. Both teams tried to
play expansive rugby but found life difficult on the sticky pitch and
consequently scoring was kept to a minimum. Cinderford upped the tempo in the
last quarter with some good line out catches and drives in which Dan Williams
was prominent. From a good position near the Drytbrook line Steve Barnes was on
hand to rumble over for a try which Trigg converted to give Cinderford some
breathing space. With 5 minutes remaining Drybrook were attempting to break out
of their own 22 when the unfortunate Large suffered his injury. The referee
sensibly called a halt to proceedings and eventually the Air Ambulance was
called to take the player to hospital.
