Drybrook 1st XV Match Report
Gloucestershire Premier League
Gloucester Old Boys 15pts Drybrook 24pts
Drybrook’s latest victory came at the expense of an Old Boys outfit that now look doomed to relegation. It should have been a more comfortable victory for Drybrook who started brightly but then fell away badly in the first half. Old Boys had little to offer other than a strong driving maul and from their only foray into Drybrook territory in the 27th minute they bundled over for a try to take the lead. Drybrook toiled away up the slope but made little impression on the home line for the remainder of the half. Early in the second half Aaron Ryder kicked a penalty for Drybrook but Old Boys were soon back on the attack with a series of penalty kicks to the corner. Desperate Drybrook defence led to a yellow card for second row Liam Jackson and eventually the home side were able to catch and drive over for a second try.
This at last made Drybrook bring some urgency to their play and they were soon on level terms when flanker Lee Ward took a quick tap penalty before riving towards the line. The ball was quickly recycled to outside half Simon Rugman who powered over for a try and Ryder added the extra points. Minutes later more enterprising play brought Drybrook to within yards of the home line and skipper Tom Reed proved unstoppable for his team’s second try with Ryder again successful with the conversion. Drybrook were on top of their game at this stage and they quickly put the result beyond doubt when more pressure led to centre Leon Meek cutting through a gap for a try with Ryder again adding the extras. Unfortunately Drybrook relaxed after this score and allowed Old Boys to get back into the game and they deservedly crossed for a consolation try towards the end.
