Chosen Hill U10s vs Drybrook RFC U10s, Sunday 29th April 2007
Drybrook visited Churchdown on another hot dry day – the pitch was the best on offer but still baked.
Chosen Hill started well and only a great tackle by Luke Roberts saved the Foresters from conceding a first minute try. But their hosts didn’t let up the pressure and soon opened their account with a well-worked score through their free-running backs. Drybrook began moving the ball along their own back line, gaining ground in successive waves until they were five metres from the Chosen Hill line. Prop Will Greenway grabbed the ball from the base of a ruck and smashed his way through several defenders for an emphatic score to level the points. The Foresters continued to tackle well, forcing Chosen Hill back until they fumbled near their own line: Drybrook hooker Will Biggs pounced and scored before the defenders could react, securing the match for the visitors.

The second game started evenly with neither side able to achieve dominance, but eventually Chosen Hill turned over Drybrook ball and ran through some half-hearted tackling for the first score. The second followed a minute later as the fired-up Chosen Hill forwards rampaged through some ineffectual tackles to extend their lead. Drybrook finally returned to the fray: Alex George made good ground down the left wing then Connor Gardiner, Alex Iles and Luke Roberts combined well, releasing winger Josh Peck on the half way to outstrip the defence for an excellent try. These well-matched teams fought on with some good flowing rugby but no reward until Chosen Hill broke away for another fine score with the last play of the match.

The third game was a totally even affair, with Drybrook forwards Will Greenway, Tom Woodman, Jordan Taylor and Kieran Auker-Howlett getting stuck in to Chosen Hill’s powerful pack while half backs Aidan Pope and George Cinderey kept the game flowing and hooker Will Biggs was outstanding out of position on the wing. The game seemed destined to reach full time scoreless but Drybrook forward Shaun Carter suddenly accelerated from well within his own half, bisected the defence and charged all the way to the line for his first, and Drybrook’s last, try of the season.

Match
report: Longlevens U10s vs Drybrook RFC U10s, Sunday 15th April 2007
A depleted Drybrook team of nine players visited Longlevens on a roasting hot day to take on the Gloucester club’s best two sides.
Drybrook started slowly and it wasn’t long before sustained Longlevens pressure was converted into points. The visitors got back into the game with good three-quarters’ play culminating in winger Josh Peck being tackled into touch two metres from the Longlevens line. But then Drybrook relaxed, letting their hosts through for a second score just before half time.
After the break the Foresters took command for the first time with Luke Roberts and Rhys Chandler tackling well and some cohesion becoming evident in their play. A good passage saw Drybrook make ground down the right flank: from a ruck, scrum half Connor Gardiner went down the blind side for a good solo try. The next score was more of a team effort, with props Tom Woodman and Will Greenway taking the ball into Longlevens territory, inside centre Alex Iles breaking almost to the line and popping a pass to speedster Josh Peck to level the scores. From a Drybrook lineout Will Greenway tapped the ball down to hooker Will Biggs to broach the defence, releasing Connor Gardiner for an excellent break to the line for his second score and Drybrook’s first lead of the day. Unfortunately the Drybrook referee lost track of time, only calling an end when Longlevens equalised deep into extra extra time.
Drybrook started the second match with exactly the same mindset as in the first and were 10 points down within a few minutes, standing off in ruck and maul, spilling their own ball and missing vital tackles to let a committed and slick Longlevens side dictate terms. Midway through the half the Foresters re-asserted themselves in style, Alex Iles ripping the ball out of a tackle on the halfway line and sprinting away for a try. More Drybrook pressure came as their props started rucking properly: Tom Woodman was tackled into touch four metres from the line after a good rumbling maul.
The visitors started badly yet again in the second half, as Longlevens took advantage with a good score in the first minute. Drybrook then switched on again: from a disrupted Longlevens lineout Drybrook hooker Will Biggs emerged with the ball, just making it to the line under a pile of red defenders. Drybrook’s backs were ripping the ball out from Longlevens attackers and gaining ground: from a ruck Connor Gardiner sped down the blind side again for his third try of the day to tie the scores. From the restart Longlevens wove through to the Drybrook line to re-take the lead, as the Foresters again went to sleep. It was a pity Drybrook had played so erratically: when they were compos mentis they looked very good, but Longlevens were always going to punish their lack of concentration.
Drybrook squad:
Will Biggs, Rhys Chandler, George Cinderey, Connor Gardiner,
Will Greenway, Alex Iles, Josh Peck, Luke Roberts, and Tom Woodman.
Drybrook RFC U10s at the County Cup Finals, Dursley, on Sunday 1st April 2007
After the atrocious conditions of the pool matches it was a relief to arrive at Dursley’s Stinchcombe ground on a dry sunny day, albeit with a cool morning breeze. Drybrook’s first match was a replay of the quarter final against Longlevens B: they had drawn 5-5 at Coney Hill but the Gloucester side were told that they were through to the semis. Drybrook pointed out that they had played four unbeaten pool matches compared to Longlevens’ two matches, so deserved to go through: a quarter final replay was then ordered by the GRFU officials.
Drybrook squad: Kieran Auker-Howlett, Will Biggs, Shaun Carter, Rhys Chandler, George Cinderey, Connor Gardiner, Alex George, Will Greenway, Alex Iles, Josh Peck, Aidan Pope, Luke Roberts, Jordan Taylor and Tom Woodman. Coaches: Pete Cinderey and Rob Pope.

Drybrook RFC U10s at the County Festival, Coney Hill RFC, Sunday 4th March 2007
In atrocious conditions Drybrook U10s battled their way to the top of their pool and drew with Longlevens B in the quarterfinals. The fourteen players gave it their all, playing with pride and enthusiasm. Although Drybrook hadn’t lost a match and Longlevens had played fewer games, coming from a smaller pool, it was the Gloucester club that went through to the semi-finals on count-back.
The first match was played in merely spitting rain and it wasn’t long before Drybrook asserted their dominance: fly half George Cinderey combined with inside centre Alex Iles in a switch move that sent the latter over for the first try. Cinderford were in combative form and it took until the stroke of halftime for Drybrook scrum half Connor Gardiner to break out and double the lead. Drybrook were now attacking with the wind: forwards and backs combined well, pounding Cinderford on all fronts. Prop Tom Woodman drove deep into Cinderford territory where fellow forward Will Greenway took over and crashed through for a try. The backs then belied the conditions by passing fluently along the line, with centre Rhys Chandler looping round to send winger Josh Peck speeding over for a fine team score. A minute later the ball came again to Peck who this time battled through five tackles for an excellent try. Inspired by this, Tom Woodman took the ball from inside the Drybrook half, put his head down and charged through the Cinderford defence like a bull in a hayfield, scattering defenders all the way to the line for an outstanding score. Connor Gardiner wrapped up proceedings with a typically decisive break, cutting through for his second try of the match.
Thornbury A were a much stiffer test, having impressed with their big mobile forwards, and they scored first after a good rolling maul. But Drybrook fought back hard: Alex Iles led the tackle count while props Shaun Carter and Will Greenway got stuck in at ruck and maul. Drybrook hooker Kieran Auker-Howlett equalised with a fine try after sustained pressure and as the Foresters again ground remorselessly forward Thornbury spilled the ball and Alex Iles pounced to give Drybrook the lead. The second half was a war off attrition as both sides defended stoutly; but just before the final whistle Thornbury snatched a draw with a well-worked score.
By now the continuous rain had made playing conditions very difficult and scores were hard to come by. After good work by Drybrook’s Aidan Pope and Jordan Taylor, winger Luke Roberts barged through the Stroud defence for the only try of the first half, though battling hooker Will Biggs was unlucky to have an excellent diving try disallowed. After the break scrum half Connor Gardiner, who had been harassing his opposite numbers all day, stretched the lead with an excellent solo score of his own. Stroud managed to claw one back when Drybrook lost concentration just before full time.
Luke Roberts charged through for the only try of this match: Drybrook were entrenched in Widden territory for most of the first half, with only desperate tackling from the Gloucester boys keeping out the Foresters. At this point the referee ended the match, awarding it to Drybrook, alleging abusive language from one of the Widden coaches.
Longlevens started well, spending most of the first half in Drybrook’s ground, and eventually they mauled their way over the line for the lead. But the Foresters fought back again after the break, with Alex George, Tom Woodman and Will Greenway scrapping manfully in the mud. Just when it all seemed bogged down in trench warfare, Drybrook’s Connor Gardiner shot out of a maul with the ball in hand and ran straight through for a superb deserved try to tie the scores.

Drybrook visited Cinderford at their Bridge ground on a cool dry day. The pitch was muddy but firm and it was agreed to have three short games to rotate the squads and prepare for the county festival next week.
Cinderford
U10s 0 Drybrook U10s 25The visitors started positively, keeping possession until Rhys Chandler cut through for their first score. Turnover ball and excellent work from Drybrook forwards Will Greenway, Will Biggs and Jordan Taylor saw scrumhalf Connor Gardiner dive over from a ruck to extend the lead just before half time.
The second half was more of the same, with Rhys Chandler scoring quickly, Luke Roberts getting the next try after good back play and Chandler grabbing his third in the dying seconds.
The second match was almost identical in style, but with different players: the alternative Drybrook front row of Shaun Carter, Kieran Auker-Howlett and Tom Woodman dominated the ruck and maul while their backs cut through the Cinderford defence at will. Flyhalf George Cinderey scored Drybrook’s first with a good change of direction and Luke Roberts ran straight for the second.
After the break Josh Peck scorched down the right wing to increase the lead; Luke Roberts and Conner Gardiner followed suit as Cinderford tired.
Cinderford U10s 0 Drybrook U10s 20
The third game started with Drybrook still in control: a slipped pass from a rolling maul saw Luke Roberts over in the right hand corner. Alex Iles then ripped the ball out of the next maul and sped off for another Drybrook score. Rhys Chandler flew over for his fourth of the day just before the break, giving the visitors a fifteen-point lead.
The last half saw Cinderford stage a valiant fight back, twice almost reaching the Drybrook line, but last ditch tackles from Chandler and Gardiner kept the Drybrook score sheet clean. Aiden Pope and Kieran Auker-Howlett made good forays into Cinderford territory but it was Luke Roberts who sealed another victory for Drybrook when he counter-attacked from Cinderford’s last desperate charge, scoring his fifth try of the day.

Drybrook RFC U10s vs Old Pats: Match Report 28th January 2007
It was agreed to have three short games, to replicate festival conditions and rotate both squads.
Drybrook started the first match with Rhys Chandler, making his debut for the club, scorching through for the first try. Old Pats fought back well, equalising a few minutes later. Both sides were rusty, neither having played a competitive match for some time, and it showed with both teams making handling and tactical errors. But the tackling was good so neither side scored again before the final whistle.
The second match started evenly as both teams improved their tactics and some good play broke out; while Old Pats kept possession from the kick-off and forged through for a good opening score, Drybrook came back with a series of breaks through outside centre Rhys Chandler. Eventually scrum half Aiden Pope dived over the line to level the score. From the restart Old Pats ran straight through the celebrating Foresters and drew ahead again with a soft score. Rhys Chandler then did the same at the other end, but the try was disallowed as his coach Pete Cinderey, ever the gentleman, claimed he had stepped into touch. Drybrook kept up the pressure and soon Aiden Pope darted through for his second score of the match, levelling the score again. Both sides made good breaks but the tackling remained resolute and only a last minute try by the indefatigable Rhys Chandler gave Drybrook the narrowest of wins.
Drybrook turned up the pressure in the final match, attacking strongly uphill and at last passing along the backs; winger Luke Roberts made a couple of good runs, wrestling over for the Foresters’ first try. The home side kept attacking but received a setback when battling forward Will Biggs came off worst in an accidental collision near the Old Pats line and retired from the fray. The Drybrook forwards continued rucking well, with Will Greenway, Tom Woodman and Jordan Taylor driving over the ball in fine style. Connor Gardiner was stopped just short of the line after a good burst down the middle but it was debutante Rhys Chandler who rounded off an excellent day with his third try to increase Drybrook’s lead. Drybrook’s tails were up and inside centre Alex Iles made it 15-0 with a typically lively run, but Old Pats are a tough unit and broke back to score just before half time. Playing downhill in the second half Drybrook kept the ball alive with Connor Gardiner, Alex Iles and Kieran Auker-Howlett all tackled near the line. Old Pats dug deep and were themselves unlucky not to score, twice surging up the hill, but the match ended with no further score.
Drybrook squad: Kieran Auker-Howlett, Will Biggs, Shaun Carter, Rhys Chandler, George Cinderey, Connor Gardiner, Abi Greaves, Will Greenway, Alex Iles, Aiden Pope, Luke Roberts, Jordan Taylor and Tom Woodman.
Drybrook hosted this match at Dene Magna as the Mannings pitches were waterlogged. It was cold and wet and the rugby wasn’t pretty. The first half was a war of attrition enlivened only by a single Chosen Hill try, scored by Elliott Creed.
After the break the visitors turned the ball over and Mark Long barged through some weak defending to double their lead. Tom Woodman made some excellent bulldozing breaks for Drybrook and Will Biggs was outstanding in defence and in the loose but Chosen Hill kept the ball alive and punished a lacklustre Drybrook display by sending Elliott Creed over for his second score in the dying moments.
The home side started poorly at the start of their second match, letting Harry Benfield open the scoring for Ledbury. But at last Drybrook buckled down and Will Greenway made a couple of powerful charges almost to the Ledbury line, where Aiden Pope darted over on the blindside for the equaliser. The play was pretty even but Drybrook’s Connor Gardiner managed to capitalise on two handling errors by Ledbury to score a brace of breakaway tries to give the hosts a 15-5 lead at half time.
For the second period Drybrook lost interest again and only Will Greenway impressed, using his strength to carry the ball deep into Ledbury territory. But the visitors kept harrying and first Freddie Coleman and then Tom Harris scored, levelling the scores. Drybrook re-awoke for the last few minutes but it was a case of too little, too late and the game ended in a draw.
Drybrook squad: Kieran Auker-Howlett, Chanise Beard, Will Biggs, Chris Brain, Shaun Carter, George Cinderey, Connor Gardiner, Alex George, Abi Greaves, Will Greenway, Alex Iles, Maizie Morgan, Josh Peck, Aiden Pope, Luke Roberts, Jordan Taylor and Tom Woodman.19th November - Home to Cinderford
Cinderford came to the Mannings with several inexperienced players so it was agreed to play three mini games with Drybrook’s 18-strong squad.
The hosts started in firm style, turning over Cinderford possession and advancing remorselessly until Alex Iles broke through to give Drybrook an early lead. Then they did the same thing again, with Iles bagging his brace. From the restart Cinderford hit back as Tom Stephens burst through some careless defence, making it 10-5. Drybrook refocused and spent the rest of the half in enemy territory, repeatedly turning over Cinderford ball until inside centre Iles cut through for his hat-trick just before half time.
After the break Drybrook really turned on the pressure, camping in the Cinderford half: Maizie Morgan and Shaun Carter made good charges down the middle while Will Biggs and George Cinderey impressed as usual. But it was the back line that made hay as scrum half Connor Gardiner scythed through for a brace of his own, Alex Iles scored twice more and wingers Josh Peck and Luke Roberts touched down in their respective corners; Chanise Beard and Josh Peck were each tackled into touch on the tryline.
Drybrook continued playing well, with Abi Greaves, Chris Brain and Vanessa Parker involved: Kieran Auker-Howlett scored again; Tom Woodman capped a powerful performance with a fine try and Auker-Howlett touched down for his hat-trick moments later. Alex George ended the game with his second score, wrapping up another good team effort.
12th November - Away at Widden
A depleted Drybrook side visited a big Widden squad on a warm, dry day: it was agreed to have two matches so all the home players could have some match experience.

Widden forced a turnover
from the start and scored in fine style down the left side, but determined play
by the Drybrook forwards saw scratch scrumhalf Josh Peck level the score by
outpacing the Widden defence. Good handling by Drybrook’s backs then released
hooker Will Biggs for an excellent try that gave the visitors the lead.
Drybrook’s Chanise Beard was tackled on the line, Will Greenway and George
Cinderey made good ground and Alex Iles was denied a try after three excellent
hands-off were adjudged illegal at this age group; so there was no further score
before half time. After the break Widden’s Charlie Grey sped down the left
wing to level the tally, but Drybrook began to dominate the game, tackling
Widden backwards and offloading well to keep the ball alive. It wasn’t long
before inside centre Alex Iles crashed through to regain Drybrook’s lead and
from then on the visitors were camped in Widden territory, pounding their line.
Alex Iles weaved through the Widden defence to bag his second score in two
minutes and then had another disallowed; fly half George
Cinderey
was stopped inches from the line but eventually Josh Peck ended a fine display
with a curving break around the defence for his brace.
Widden Old Boys U10s 20 Drybrook U10s 25
Widden started the second match with two quick scores but Drybrook’s George Cinderey replied with a well-earned try of his own. Widden fought back immediately to make it 15-5 but speedster Josh Peck dissected the home defence for his third score of the day to reduce Widden’s advantage to 5 points at the break. Drybrook kept passing along the line to their wings and soon Luke Roberts forced his way over to even the tally, but the visitors were flagging and Widden regained the lead with a good break through some tired tackles. Drybrook then showed tremendous heart, with Alex Iles and Will Biggs leading the tackle count and Luke Roberts, Will Greenway, Josh Peck and Shaun Carter rushing ever forward until George Cinderey crashed over to make it 20-all. A final effort from the visitors saw Alex Iles round off an excellent match with his third score of the day giving Drybrook a hard-earned victory.
Drybrook were represented by: Chanise Beard, Will Biggs, Chris Brain, Shaun Carter, George Cinderey, Will Greenway, Alex Iles, Maizie Morgan, Vanessa Parker, Josh Peck and Luke Roberts.
22nd October - Away at Old Pats
As both sides had big squads it was agreed to have three shortened games, so everyone could have a reasonable run-out.
Drybrook
started with a period of sustained pressure, knocking back Old Pats in the
tackle and running straight lines until prop Alex George surged down the left
for a good opening try. More pressure from the restart kept Drybrook in
Old Pats territory and it was just a matter of time before back Alex Iles
charged down the middle for the visitor’s next score. The second half
continued in the same vein, with Drybrook dominating in all areas. The forwards
rucked well while the backs passed fluently out of the tackle, and the interplay
between scrum half Connor Gardiner, fly half George Cinderey and inside centre
Alex Iles kept Drybrook in complete control. After a couple of minutes Alex Iles
repeated his earlier feat, dodging past the defence and sprinting straight down
the centre for his brace. Drybrook’s Aiden Pope was unlucky to be denied
two tries after touching down fractionally short when tackled on the line after
typically quick sniping bursts down the wing. Scrum half Connor Gardiner rounded
off a good match by seeing a gap and going for it, scoring under the posts to
give the Foresters a deserved victory.

The second match was much more even as Old Pats made a couple of good attacks and spent a little time in Forest territory. At half time the scoreboard had been left unmarked, but from the restart Old Pats kept possession for several phases, eventually overlapping on the left wing to chalk up their first try of the day, to resounding cheers from the home supporters. Alex Iles nearly made it three identical tries by carving down the centre from way out but was tackled on the tryline and adjudged to have knocked on. The match remained very even and neither team managed to score again before the final whistle.
The final game was a role reversal of the first match, with Old Pats first to the breakdown and attacking with confidence. The Drybrook forwards stood off, their three-quarters were sucked into the rucks and the Old Pats backs passed wide and long, harassing the Foresters’ stretched line. Only desperate tackling led by Alex Iles and Will Biggs kept their line unbreached until half time. After the break Old Pats kept up the pressure and Drybrook started missing tackles, letting their hosts over for four scores before full time in a disappointing end to the visitor’s day.
15th October - Away at Hucclecote
A sizable Drybrook squad turned up at Hucclecote for the first encounter between the teams for several years. The hosts agreed to have three shortened matches so that both squads could be fully utilised.
Drybrook started with
intent, passing well until Kieran Auker-Howlett touched down a minute after
kick-off. Drybrook tackled hard from the restart, turned possession over and
attacked again with Chanise Beard crashing through several tacklers for an
excellent try. Hucclecote struggled to make headway against fine Forest
tackling and after Alex George almost scored, losing the ball on the line after
a good charge, scrum-half Connor Gardiner notched up the third try for the
visitors, forcing his way over at the end of another wave of Drybrook pressure.
Hucclecote responded well and took play into Drybrook territory for Ashley Booth
to make a powerful charge through several tackles and over the line for a
half-time score of 5-15. The second half was much more even as Hucclecote
rucked and mauled well and tackled with more belief. They contained the
Foresters until after some good forward pressure Alex Iles popped a quick pass
off a ruck to Alex George on the burst: the latter made no mistake for
Drybrook’s fourth. The hosts fought back gamely and spent some time in
Forest territory, eventually driving over for a hard-earned team try, claimed by
Ashley Booth from under a pile of Hucclecote bodies.

Match Actions from the Games featuring Drybrook Attacks
Hucclecote came out fired up for the second match and it wasn’t long before Sam Layton put the hosts ahead. Ashley Booth made another powerful run, carrying tacklers over for his third score of the day, giving Hucclecote a 10-0 half-time lead. The second half was similar, with Hucclecote keeping most of the possession and tackling firmly to deny Drybrook a score. Ashley Booth Scored his second brace of the day and Matt Christmas scored a excellent interception try to seal a good Hucclecote win.

The third match saw Drybrook’s strongest team in action, and they started in similar vein to the first with Kieran Auker-Howlett rounding off good backs interplay with the first touchdown. The second try was the result of an excellent switch movement between fly half George Cinderey and inside centre Alex Iles which saw the latter outstrip the wrong footed defence for a score. Drybrook kept the ball alive with a fine display of passing that saw both wingers, Luke Roberts and Josh Peck, score in their respective corners for a 20-0 lead at the break. Scrum-half Aiden Pope rounded off a typically probing display by darting over for Drybrook’s fifth try and although Hucclecote held their heads up and kept on chasing they couldn’t stop Kieran Auker-Howlett and Josh Peck bagging their braces before the final whistle.
