2006/7 1st XV Kit presented by Sponsors

On 21st October for the Home league match against Widden Old Boys,  sponsors Brian Hale of Polypipe and Roger Hale from Hale and Co. handed over the new 1st XV strip for this season:

The sponsors also present Man of the match awards and the photo's are included in the Match Report.

NEW COACH NAMED FOR COMING SEASON

Julian Horrobin the ex Bristol and Coventry back row man has been appointed as the new coach for Drybrook RFC. Julian has decided it is time to take a step back from a distinguished playing career that also included England Under 21 and schools caps, East Midlands and the Barbarians as well as numerous appearances for Gloucestershire.

He has decided to concentrate on coaching from now on and sees this appointment as the ideal opportunity to launch his own coaching career. However he does not exclude the possibility of donning the Drybrook shirt should the occasion demand through injury and unavailability or if his own inclusion would assist in player development.

Drybrook are delighted to have secured Julian’s services and will be hoping that such a high profile appointment will have the desired effect in terms of recruitment and results in the season ahead.

Drybrook start their official training on Tuesday 11th July at 7.00 pm and will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings after that.

Pre season trial matches have already been arranged against Ross (August 19th) and Gloucester Old Boys (August 26th) both at the Mannings with 3.00 pm kick offs. A friendly fixture at home to Old Centralians then follows before Drybrook start their league campaign at Whitehall on September 9th.

Drybrook to Reform Colts XV

For the first time in nearly 10 years Drybrook will be running a Saturday Colts XV in the local area league and have already secured the services of 2 new coaches.

John Arundel will take control of the forwards having had a wealth of experience playing for Cardiff Youth, Nuneaton, the Army and Combined Services at prop.  John will be using his army contacts to set up a pre season training camp at an Army base to ensure the lads have the best possible preparation for the season ahead.

A former outside half Pete Price will look after the backs bringing with him the experience of playing and captaining Havant as well as coaching them at National League level.

Richard Jackson is to be the team manager and he will be working closely with Dave Auker-Howlett, Drybrook’s junior section chairman.

The Colts will also train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

New Season to begin with Danny for the Minis and Juniors

The Mini and Junior section of the club hold their first training and registration day on Sunday September 3rd at 10.30 am. Drybrook will be running teams at every age group from Under 7,s right up to Colts level as well as Under 14 and Under 17 girls.

An added bonus on this day will be the appearance of England second row Danny Grewcock who will be at the club in his capacity of rugby ambassador for Access Sports, the organisation that has recently given Drybrook’s mini /junior section a sizable donation to promote rugby and assist with general running costs.

Junior Presentation Day - June 2006

There was a big turnout for the Drybrook RFC Mini/Junior Section’s annual Award Presentation Day. Held on Sunday 4th June in a big marquee at the Mannings ground, the day was graced by a hot sunny start; a sudden downpour in the afternoon did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd as even the pig roast was under canvas.

Popular Gloucester, England and Lions prop Phil Vickery was guest of honour: he presented the awards, gave a well-received speech about the value of grass-roots rugby and stayed on for several hours, signing miscellaneous rugby paraphernalia for his admirers, young and old.

Amongst the guests were representatives from sponsors Ross Aviation, Richards Crane & Transport, Fisher Builders, Harriers Financial Services and the local parish council.

Drybrook Mini/Junior Section Chairperson Dave Auker-Howlett opened proceedings by thanking the sponsors, volunteers, players and parents for their support over the past season, and describing the achievements and cups won by the various teams.

Sally Morse won the Dave Roberts Memorial Trophy for Volunteer of the Year for her hard work and fund-raising; it was presented by Dave Roberts’ son Jason.

Tracy and Ian Dubberley were presented with a wine glass on stand and pewter tankard respectively to mark their retirement after eleven years cooking, coaching and helping the Junior Section. Departing coaches Andy Jones and Chris Thomas were given glass tankards in recognition for their work training Drybrook junior rugby teams.

The Players Player of the Year was Tom Morse; Coaches Player of the Season was Liam Jackson and an award for outstanding achievement at U7s/U8s was made to Ollie Moore for scoring over 50 tries in one season.

The following players from each team received Best Player and Most Improved Player statuettes:

Kerry Powell and Macaulay Moore (U7s); Joe Watts and Sam Jenkins (U8s); Connor Gardiner and George Cinderey (U9s); Dan Pearson and Joel Osborne (U10s); Craig Boughton and Lewis Hek (U11s); Kyle Frowen and Hayden Parker (U12s); Rob King and Richard Mace (U14s); Liam Jackson and Steve Virgo (U16s); Gareth Ruck and Ashley Burris (U17s); Chloe Moore and Lauren Graham (U14 Girls); Ceri Large and Louise Morton (U17 Girls). Every player then received a small trophy, a Raging Bull boot bag and a pair of rugby socks in recognition of their support of the club.

After the Girls teams were given their trophies, their smart new match shirts were handed over by Tony Cole on behalf of sponsors Harriers Financial Services.

The Drybrook RFC Mini/Junior Section 2006/7 season starts with a bang on Sunday 3rd September 2006 in collaboration with major funding partners Access Sport. A current England international player will be on hand to give advice to the youngsters and all age ranges from U7s to Colts will be supported, with girls just as welcome as boys. Activities will be organised for players old and new. Drybrook RFC Mini/Junior Section is one of the few clubs nationally to have been awarded the RFU Seal of Approval. For more information about joining, coaching or sponsoring please phone Dave Auker-Howlett on 01594 543103

18th Feb - New Kit Sponsors unveiled

Drybrook’s officially unveiled its new kit on the weekend in the Home league victory against Matson.  This year the kit has been sponsored by Coleford Domestic appliances, who have been a major sponsor for a number of season now.

Gloucestershire County Cup Plate Quarter-Final

Drybrook’s match with Gordon League was cancelled at short notice as the visitors were unable to raise a strong enough team. This left the home side with yet another blank Saturday and with no time to try and arrange an alternative fixture. League’s excuse was that front row injuries made it impossible to field a side and were forced to hand Drybrook a walkover. Drybrook go through to the semi final.

Drybrook welcome back a Kiwi friend

Steve Kircaldy recently paid a flying visit to Drybrook and visit some old friends.  Originally, Steve came over to join us in the 1978/79 season with Mark Wells a Samoan and utility forward. Steve was scrum half throughout the season and they both ended up picking up forest of dean combination medals after beating Lydney Utd in the final at Cinderford.
Mark went back at the end of that season but Steve stayed on for the beginning of the following season before leaving to tour Europe with Les Olsen , an Aussie who also joined us for a short period around this time.  During his visit Steve managed to attend a club training session and also turn out on a Saturday for the Extra XV.

1. Steve performs an ancient Drybrook ritual.
2. Steve Receives Drybrook kit from Derek Trigg.
3. Steve poses with his kit.

Chris Rawlings first to 200 league appearances

On Saturday 24th September 2004, Chris Rawlings became the first Drybrook player to reach 200 league appearances in their Glos. Premier thrashing of Aretians.  Amazingly this was also Chris's 500th Senior appearance and a small presentation was made in the club after the match.

To celebrate Chris managed to score Drybrook's final try in their victory and also produce the funniest moment in the match where he touched down for a try 5 metres short.

Other presentations on Saturday were for Steve Skelton and Chris Thomas both receiving their 1st XV appearance ties from last season, both pictured below receiving ties from Chairman Paul Mason.

CCDP grant lights up Drybrook

September 13, 2005 -   Rugby at Drybrook RFC will be able to go on all day and all night now thanks to a Community Club Development Programme grant from the Rugby Football Union.  The grant of £45,716 has been awarded to keep the Gloucestershire club fully lit-up with the instalment of new training full-pitch floodlights.   The Community Club Development Programme has been developed by Sport England and the government to forge stronger links between the country’s rugby clubs and their local communities. The Rugby Football Union is tasked with distributing the funds, which will help to provide quality coaching and increase participation in rugby.   Paul Mason of Drybrook RFC said: “We are lucky that Gloucestershire are a proactive Constituency Body in determining which clubs need help most. They realised that we could benefit from the Community Club Development Partnership grant as our training lights were getting a bit old and because we have a bustling junior section.”  With the new season just underway Mason says the club is already reaping the benefits of the pitch improvements. He added: “Our old floodlights were what I would class as home-made drain pipes. Basically they were car parks poles with a couple of bulbs on - they certainly weren’t a set of match floodlights! They served a purpose at the time, but the new installation of floodlights has come as a real boost to the club.   “In conjunction with the award of the grant we put in place a club development plan to encourage more volunteers in, to expand the junior section and to improve the general maintenance and management of the club.  “The plan has worked really well and as a result, in addition to the new floodlights, we have already attracted more junior players, volunteers, coaches and first-aiders to the club. We are a small village club but we like to think we punch above our weight.”   Phil de Glanville, Head of Partnerships at Sport England South West, added: “The community club development programme is an important part of the investment into the infrastructure of sport in the South West, especially as the clubs are nominated by the governing bodies and will be key parts of helping each sport deliver its whole sport plan objectives"  “We hope that facilities such as this one at Drybrook will help keep getting more people taking part in sport and physical activity as we strive to make the South West an active and successful sporting region.”  Drybrook RFC will officially unveil their new flood-lit pitch on Sunday 16th October at 7pm
