Widden OB 17pts Drybrook Utd 27pts
Drybrook’s second string was always in control of this high scoring game at Widden and eventually emerged deserved winners. Playing with the stiff breeze at their backs in the first half Drybrook’s forwards were always on top and they took the lead with a try by centre Steve Williams quickly followed by a Jimmy Ryder penalty. Tom Treherne scored Drybrook’s second try following some enterprising play and Chris Thomas converted to give his team a 15pts – nil interval lead.
An injury to Widden’s hooker led to uncontested scrums in the second half and the home side were able to provide better ball for their dangerous back division. They could not prevent Tom Treherne increasing Drybrook’s lead with his second try but once Drybrook lost second row Vic Jones to the sin bin Widden scored 2 tries to set up tense last 10 minutes. Drybrook’s Dave Thomas crashed over for a try following a lot of pressure on Widden’s line and Chris Thomas converted but Widden had the last word with their third try following a sweeping move down field. For Drybrook forwards Simon Ballinger, Vic Jones and Mark Castree were outstanding with centre pairing Steve Williams and Dave Appleby also looking sharp.
